Grand Targhee, located on the other side of the Tetons, is a winter wonderland for skiers and snowboarders. The resort has great snow, restaurants and shops. Many prefer it to the Jackson Hole Mountain resort. The lift tickets are cheaper, too, at $57 compared to $72 for the Jackson Hole resort. The main drawback for anyone staying in Jackson Hole is that it takes about an hour to get there, over a mountain pass that is scenic but sometimes tricky to drive in certain ice and snow conditions. A shuttle does leave about 7:30 from Jackson, so skiers can let an experienced driver negotiate Teton Pass, and this certainly leads to a more relaxed trip to the resort. On the Idaho side, the road climbs west of Driggs, Idaho, to National Park land where there is usually sufficent parking on a good skiing day, although drivers sometimes need to park on the road leading to the resort. But once there, the lift to the top offers fantastic panoramic views, and there are plenty of slopes, especially for beginning to moderate skiers. Our experience was that, whereas everyone loved the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, once we discovered Grand Targhee, we prefered it, being a family that does not particularly relish challenging slopes. We were content to spend our last two days driving over Teton Pass to Grand Targhee. The scenery could not have been more spectacular.
